Hipebeast is a South African photographer that takes astonishing street-styled pictures of Cape Town in a way that has never been seen before. His real name is Wayne Robertson and he is a man of many talents, as he is also a very known and respected hip-hop producer in the country. Only in the last few years he has really invested himself into photography and has now gained a status of one of the best street photographers in South Africa.
Wayne features all of his works on Instagram accounts, which are: @eyedazzlerr and @hipebeast, plus they are all available for print (if interested). It is clear why he named one of his accounts Hipebeast, however, the other one he explains to be inspired by Alison’s Halo album released in the late 90’s, he just put his own little twist to it – a double ‘r’. As might be expected, his works are nowhere close to cliché or corny. Wayne takes pictures of raw streets of Cape Flats, resenting from anything touristy, and adds an extra boost to his pictures later in post. Since he started his photography career, Wayne has already worked with such brands as New Balance, Butan Wear, and Mr Price Denim just to name a few.
As for his workflow – he never plans anything, he just shoots as it goes. Plus, he compares the process to music production – searching, trying out and putting together different beats or in this case photographs. Lastly, for his post-production, he mostly uses his PC (with a few exceptions of mobile apps) and such editing programs as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom.
