The ama-Xhosa are part of Noor’s identity; all her maternal relatives are from the ama–Xhosa tribe who stem from the Eastern Cape. The traditions and cultures have had a lot of influence in Noor’s upbringing. As a child she would often hear her mother speaking to her friends in isi-Xhosa, a language that was not in her vocabulary, but was familiar to her.
It is this in mind that when Noor arrived in South Africa, she discovered how even more animated and proud the people are. Albeit in Johannesburg she saw this but it is the rural valleys of the Eastern Cape that she witnessed the depth of her culture. The portrait of the Xhosa woman epitomizes an image that Noor created of the elderly sitting on top of a green hill telling and sharing stories of wisdom to one another, while enjoying a tobacco pipe!
