Celebrities and Brands are Embracing Upcycled & Recycled Fashion

A few weeks ago, our favourite celebrities walked the red carpet en route to the Tony Awards, showing off the most inspired outfits of the award season. While FX’s Pose star, Billy Porter, is known to steal the show with his extravagant outfits, he really outdid himself with his get-up at the Tony Awards. The frothy pink and red-toned suit-gown designed and custom-made by Scenery, is made up of the curtains used for Broadway’s musical, Kinky Boots. Scenery is known to make all their creations using retired theatre backdrops and donates a percentage of their sales to TDF.

Porter and Scenery aren’t the only ones to have embraced an eco-conscious approach to fashion by upcycling and recycling, however. The renowned, Italian luxury fashion house, Prada, has just announced that they will be launching a new collection of nylon bags made with recycled plastic by 2012. The “Re-Nylon” collection will be made from recycled ocean plastic, textile fibre waste and fishing nets.

Another luxury fashion brand promoting eco-consciousness, is Triarchy, which focuses on sustainable denim. Requiring a ridiculous amount of water consumption, denim is one of the biggest evils in our wardrobe. Recognizing this fact, the Triarchy founders create new denim designs made from vintage stock. This approach has allowed them to save over 1,000,000 gallons of water, and support the Isla Urbana NGO, which provides fresh drinking water to regions in Mexico with limited access to drinking water by ways of rainwater catchment systems.

With celebrities and brands such as Billy Porter and Triarchy using their platform to spread an important, environmental message, the public is slowly starting to recognize the importance of recycling and upcycling as a way to protect our planet without sacrificing our style.
