Weekend Style Guide: 3 Fashion Icons Wearing African Designers

It’s Friday ladies and you know what that means – time to kick off those pumps, lay back with a collection of fashion and entertainment magazines and sip on a glass of wine! This is truly the best way to prepare for a weekend packed full of fun and professional events. Obviously, you’re going to have to look the part when you strut into your first work event on Saturday morning and all the latest features on fashion icons in your favourite magazines and on blogs will help spark some inspirations. If you’ve exhausted your back-log of magazines without reaching any fashion-epiphanies, not to worry – our Weekend Style Guide is just what you need. Here are our three favourite fashion icons wearing African designers you should know!

Uzoamaka “Uzo” Aduba

If ever there was anyone to rock a jumpsuit, it’s Uzoamaka “Uzo” Aduba – and no, there’s no pun intended here. The Orange is the New Black star has wowed many a red-carpet-event in jumpsuits ranging from elegant to playful, but our favourite piece without a doubt was a snazzy number by Busayo NYC. Uzo is proud of her Nigerian heritage and often discusses her love for African culture – and what better way to demonstrate this pride than by wearing a jumpsuit designed by Busayo, a brand focused on traditional, hand-dyed Adire prints.

Kelis

It’s no wonder American singer-songwriter Kelis has developed her own unique sense of style given that her mother, Eveliss, is a Chinese-Puerto Rican fashion designer. Kelis loves to play with different prints and patterns, fashion eras and fun graphics, and always surfs the fine line between casual chic and extravagant – her outfits very much seem to reflect her mood. Therefore, Lisa Folawiyo’s designs are particularly fitting for Kelis’ style: the perfect blend of playful sophistication. Kelis looked stunning in Jewel by Lisa’s Frou Frou skirt paired with a simple white tank top, green pumps and golden jewelry.

Michelle Obama

Former First Lady of the United States and world-wide fashion icon, Michelle Obama, has established herself as a true role model for women. She dresses to impress no one other but herself and that’s what fashion should really be all about – a way to express yourself in a manner that will make you feel confident and make you stand a little taller in your pumps. The creations of Nigerian designer, Duro Olowu, have quickly become wardrobe staples for Michelle Obama, who even commissioned him to design decorations for the White House during her husband’s presidency.
