A guide for the holidays (1/2).

As the holidays are approaching, we think it is the best time to mention 10 African streetwear brands that could serve as gift ideas for your loved ones. For the moment we will be mentioning half of them in this article and the other half in the next one, so stay tuned for that as well as for other gift guides coming up!

Continuing on, all of these brands had a strong year of 2017, as they have been coming up with incredible collections, which all empower, connect and renew the pride of Africa and the diaspora. Clothing is one of the ways to express your identity and these brands can easily assist you with that.

First one on the list is Daily Paper, which was inspired by the founder’s (Hussein Suleiman, Jefferson Osei, and Abderrahmane Trabsini) backgrounds (Somali, Morocco, and Ghana). Moreover, these guys are greatly inspired by contemporary fashion, plus their designs represent the diversity of Africa with a focus on quality tailoring and authenticity.

Next up, we have – Pop Caven, which is a brand that produces much-needed, modern-casual clothing, while simultaneously celebrating Africa’s culture and pop culture.

Moving on to number 3 – TELFAR.  It is a very progressive fashion brand that incorporates pieces for both girls and boys to wear in their collections.  The founder of the brand is Telfar Clemens (hence the brand’s name), who is of Liberian-American descent and is also a recent winner of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund.

Next up, is a streetwear brand with a unique way of expressing Afrofuturism – super Yaya 100%. It is based in Abidjan and features customizable, West African inspired outfits, plus catchy screen print t-shirts.

Lastly, we reach – African AF, which has recently released their Fall/Winter collection of 2017. The brand can be found in OkayAfrica website’s shop and it includes different adaptations of the best-selling t-shirts as well as a Fela Kuti capsule collection.
