How the Fashion Industry is Focusing on Sustainability this Year
The world is finally waking up to the severe environmental problems we are facing largely thanks to major industries and their toxic approach. In a bid to practice eco-consciousness and fight for a sustainable future, the fashion industry has started to take different measures to promote a healthier, fairer and environmentally friendly future.
Transparency
One of the main mistakes we make when buying into the fashion industry, is not studying the origins of our garments. Though we are all aware of the ugly truth behind fast fashion, we may be quicker to trust smaller boutiques and no-name brands to provide us with clothing with a fair-trade, cruelty-free background. It is our responsibility to understand what we are buying, and more and more brands are offering 100% transparency when it comes to the materials used and the production of the clothes they are selling. Always read the fine print and go the extra mile to learn more about the clothes you are buying.
Innovative Recycled Creations
The industry has finally acknowledged its huge waste problem and a lot of clever designers and brands are coming up with innovative ways to turn said waste into affordable and functional garments for the less fortunate. Take Angela Luna, for example, the Parsons School of Design graduate who created a line of transformable outerwear made out of old tents that double as clothes and shelter. The United by Blue brand, on the other hand, is all about responsible, durable goods and has created a new proprietary outerwear insulation made of North American bison fiber and a recycled polyester blend, called B100, which promises to be the new, eco-conscious insulation material used for outdoor clothes.
Rent vs Buy
How many times have you had to invest in an event-specific outfit that you never wore again? Or maybe you’re constantly shelling out large amounts of money to keep up with your colleagues’ sophisticated sense of style. The industry is aware of the pressure people feel to keep buying new clothes and has finally come up with a great, sustainable alternative that will keep your spending pleasure and finances in check. Clothing rental companies are popping up in major cities around the world and offer excellent gear at rental prices. You no longer have to shell out big money for a ball gown you’ll only ever wear once!
